Stealing Happy Hours

Listening: Stealing Happy Hours by 311

With one week in the books, I couldn’t be more excited about my newfound “working” status. Every day last week I found out something new that I had not known when I accepted the position of Production Artist for a new in-house digital studio at my company. Some examples:

  • Dress Code: My first day I wore a sweater over a button down, dress pants and dress shoes, only to have my boss come over to my desk in a black tee, jeans, and sneakers. Point taken.

  • Happy Hour: Every other Thursday from 4:30-6:30 my company hosts a happy hour on the 2nd floor of our building with free drinks (2-drink maximum per person, they stamp you) and snacks. Awesome way to not only mingle and meet people in the company, but also start off your standard Thursday happy hour. And they have beers like Red Stripe and Harp.

  • Summer Fridays: this is one I can honestly say I had ZERO idea about before taking the job; apparently, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, everyone gets 3 Fridays that they can just take off. Those 3, on top of my two weeks vacation, and the week between Christmas and New Years, adds up to almost 4 weeks of vacation my first year.

These are just some of the positives I took away from week one. Throw in the fact that everyone I work with (supervisors included) is amazingly cool and down to earth, I’m around some awesome food and bars, and the subway is literally outside my building’s door, and you’ve got a recipe for some quality working conditions. A buddy of mine made the joke “Guy goes from no job to not only working by me but a job with its own happy hour! Nutss” to which I couldn’t help but reply “It’s amazing what patience and a positive mental attitude will get you these days.” Believe that.

I’d like to take this time to point out that my preseason picks to make it to the Super Bowl were the Jets and the Packers; even if that falls through at this stage of the playoffs, I’m happy that at least I can spot a contender(s). Twenty weeks later and I’m sticking with my picks to win this week; the Jets will get to Big Ben and upset the Steelers, while Clay Matthews and his cohorts are going to make life miserable for Jay Cutler. Cutler doesn’t have the attitude to get back in a game like this, and with Rodgers on the other side playing how he’s been (31-36, 366 yards, 3 TDs, 1 rushing TD on the road in Atlanta), I’m thinking Green Bay is almost a lock to take home the Lombardi Trophy.

In other sporting news, the Devils are actually playing like a team as of late. They’ve managed to get 7 out of 8 possible points in their last 4 games. This season is shot already, thanks to Johnny Mac, but it’s looking positive for the future. Young guys are playing well (Zharkov, Tedenby, Clarkson, Fraser), but you have to wonder who is gone by the trade deadline. Wouldn’t be surprised if Arnott goes, or Clarkson (hoping not… but he’d return a lot). At least I can watch them again without wanting to shoot something. Time to finish the work week; back to back 4-day weeks with Snoop Dogg in VT on the 29th.
