Spring Forward

Listening: Uberlin, off the new REM album. I'm listening to the entire album, but this is one of the ones that caught my ear first.

Happy first day of spring! I usually take the stance that winter is my favorite season. I don't mind being cold versus being too hot. I love the snow, and snowboarding takes the cake as far as favorite physical activities in my repertoire. However, working in/commuting to the city makes me long for nicer weather (Friday's, for example, will do). The irony of it is, once the weather does get nicer, my stance becomes Monmouth county is the place to be. The addition of a beach house in Belmar to the summer as of a week or so ago may have something to do with that. Either way, the seasons are changing, and I love living in a place where you can actually experience all 4 seasons; even if sometimes you can experience them in one week.

The last time I posted, the Earth's axis was 25 centimeters different, our day was 1.8 microseconds longer, Japan was 8 feet further from California (and had a number more villages and citizens), and I had never seen the moon be visibly two or three times larger than the sun. That mother nature is a devastating, powerful, and destructive thing of beauty. A conversation with a friend over the tsunami led to a pretty interesting (and somewhat scary) thought: imagine if the Earth just dropped out of orbit. The initial thought was to picture if the Earth's crust fell off the core ; or, moreso, if that even is possible. Then the idea was brought up as to if we had just lost our orbit around the sun completely; some funny/disturbing imagery right there.

Kind of tough to talk about sports these days; at least, the ones I'd like to talk about. March Madness is always fun, but after 2 uninspiring losses by the Devils (which, admittedly came after some serious hockey for a very, very long time), they are all but out of playoff contention. They pretty much have to go 10-1 over the last 11 AND get some help to even have a chance. Oh well, after a rocky start, it's been fun. Now on to getting Parise that "C" and his the money he deserves. As far as the other sport in my Top 2, the NFL and NFLPA are making fans everywhere CRAZY with their complete irrationality. I can't imagine not having an NFL season. Someone better step it up.

Over two months into commuting life and I've finally gotten my first new book: The Social Animal by David Brooks. After seeing his interview on Colbert, I figured his latest writing to be perfect to get me back into the swing of keeping my mind active and interpreting. I'm only one chapter in, but it's already catching my interest (it's the first book I've started taking notes and underlining things of interest; at least, by choice). Brooks is one smart dude.

Got Royksopp tomorrow night with my buddy Anthony. Spring always shoots a signal to a new season of live music for the year. After seeing Rebelution 2 weeks ago at Irving Plaza on a whim, the schdeule as of now is Royksopp, hopefully Bamboozle (two Thrice sets, and original Further Seems Forever lineup!), Easy-Star All-Stars with John Brown's Body on 4/20. There are some other probables, most notably being 311's summer tour.

Besides sending the final label and 6-pack carrier design that I did to Cricket Hill Brewery, I can't think of a whole lot that's new. So... that's all I got. I know I say this every time, but the updates will get more frequent. And this time, I mean it.
